Vine Cultivation Methods

Grapevine is a precious plant which needs a regular tending, in order to accentuate its potentiality. For this reason, vine growers conceived lots of different training methods, namely vine cultivation techniques that influence the quality of the outcome.
Every training method considers climate conditions, specific soil and grapefruit characteristics either to respect and emphasize the variety of vine. Training systems like “pergola” are important because they express the oenological tradition of a particular area.

  • Pergola
“Pergola” is typical of the Palazzo della Torre vineyard and it is aimed to produce wines such as Amarone, Recioto and Valpolicella. Vine shoots are placed on a level almost parallel to the ground and slightly inclined towards the high point, in order to create a sort of inclined roof. “Pergola” fits terraced vineyards on hills, since the rows of vines don’t shade each others and the exposure is perfect for the ripening of grapes intended for semi-drying.
  • Guyot
The name comes after the French botanic who described this training system for the first time. This is the most widespread training method in those country with a high quality wine tradition. The vine grows on three wires: the main one is to sustain the fruit bearing cane (which is every year renewed with the winter pruning) the other two hold the buds tied. The Guyot is employed in La Grola and in La Poja vineyards and is perfect for red grapefruits intended for outstanding wines that need no semi-drying.
  • Cordon spur
This kind of training method is widespread today in modern vine cultivation, since it permits a high quality grapes production. The trunk of the vine (perennial) is tied to a wire and grows horizontally till it reaches the nearby vine. The bud development goes on three wires stretched between the support stakes.
Vineyards of Villa Giona are cultivated with Cordon Spur.
